February is Black History Month

Celebrate Black History Month with a visit to the American Jazz Museum!
Kansas City is RICH in jazz– take this opportunity to visit the Jazz Museum and experience the music and history that shaped our city.
“With its roots in Black culture, jazz is infused in America’s DNA, playing a large part in many social movements, developments and events for over 100 years. Explore it all – including how famous Black musicians like Charlie Parker and Ella Fitzgerald led the way and how jazz has impacted Kansas City – at the American Jazz Museum in KC’s historic 18th and Vine District.”

Congratulations to our Student of the Month – Liam Krueger

Liam has been taking lessons at SKCMA for NINE years and as you can imagine, he’s a fantastic drummer! He has had several different teachers at SKCMA through the years and is currently taking with Laura Lee Crandall. She chose Liam this month because of his great work ethic, his commitment to the drums and that he’s excited to learn new things.
Five fast facts about Liam:
- Liam is 14 and in 8th grade
- He decided to start drum lessons because he heard the drums while waiting outside of his brother and sister’s music lessons. He thought, “that sounds cool. I want to do that!”
- Liam is a drummer in his school jazz band, percussion ensemble and middle school band.
- His favorite song they’ve worked on is Backlash for jazz band
- Favorite thing he’s learned in lessons? Funk grooves and drumline stuff
