Why study woodwinds at South Kansas City Music Academy?

Our woodwind instructors are warm and friendly, and get to know each student on a personal level. We work with you to craft a lesson plan that fits your individual needs and favorite type of music. We’ll get you playing fast, with great technique, and moving towards your goals.

What styles do you teach on the woodwinds?

Many students come to us for classical or jazz studies and to help them in their school band, but we also teach rock, pop, and blues if that is what interests the student!

How qualified are South Kansas City Music Academy’s woodwind instructors?

Our woodwind instructors have received their education from excellent universities such as Kansas City’s own University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music. Our teachers bring a wealth of teaching and performing experience to their lessons. In addition to their teaching credentials, our teachers have warm personalities, are extremely friendly and get to know each student on a personal level.

What will I learn in woodwind lessons at South Kansas City Music Academy?

Beginner students can expect to work on sight reading, technique, fingering, and theory. Our instructors balance musicianship and fun by making sure that each lesson presents a new technical challenges or theory concept, and ends with something fun, such as your favorite song. We use a variety of method books and encourage students to bring in songs they want to learn.

Advanced students will work on soloing/improvisation, more challenging solo pieces, and have the opportunity to play in our student Bands.

Do I have to know how to read music?

No. Beginners are welcome!

Do I need to purchase a saxophone, flute, or clarinet to learn the instrument?

Yes, but we know that can be an intimidating idea for a new student or parent of a new student without experience! We can help guide students in the purchase of a great instrument, either new or used, that you will enjoy for years to come. Please call if you need assistance finding a good instrument!

Are there student recitals?

Absolutely! Every Spring and Fall, our students have the opportunity to perform on stage for family and friends. Unlike most of our competitors, we do not charge students a fee to perform and admission is free, so you can invite all of your family and friends.
