Recital Week!

Hello SKC Music Academy students and families,

It’s recital season at South Kansas City Music Academy!  We LOVE hosting our bi-annual recitals, as it gives our incredible students a chance to show off all they have been learning and to be celebrated by friends and family!  More Recital info can be found HERE.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

This is a great time to talk about stage fright and how to overcome anxiety when performing in front of an audience.  I highly recommend our musicians start playing in front of other people in the weeks leading up to the recitals.  Start with just one person you feel comfortable with.  Then play in front of friends, parents, siblings, extended family, etc.  Challenge yourself to play a song in front of someone else at least once a week. Having several small performances will make the recital much easier!

One thing we do at SKC Music Academy is schedule informal “peer performances” every few months, where students take the last few minutes of their lessons to play for another student and teacher.  It’s another great baby step to gaining confidence playing in front of an audience!

Musical Tech To Check Out – The GAP CLICK Metronome

Every musician needs to have good time – the ability to keep the beat without speeding up or slowing down. A metronome is a device (or app!) that makes a consistent sound (click) at the speed you choose, to help you keep a steady rhythm.

We just discovered the Gap Click metronome app and LOVE it! Gap Click is a unique metronome app that goes beyond the traditional function of simply providing a steady beat.  It helps you improve your ability to keep tempo without it! It can be setup many ways, but at the most basic option, the click sound would run for one measure, then a measure of silence (the gap). This would repeat over and over. The musician keeps playing during the silent measure, focusing on playing steady, with the goal of landing right with the click when it comes back in.

This app has so many ways to set it up and improve your time keeping.  Ask your teacher for ways to implement it into your practice!
